When Danny Cavanagh walked into GAP’s Wirral depot on October 1st 2001, for his first shift as a warehouse operative, he readily admits he knew very little about the building products industry. What he did know was that GAP felt like a business with genuine potential and a culture where hard work would be rewarded.
Now, as he approaches his 25th anniversary with the company, Danny sits on the Board of Directors as Depot Operations Director, managing everything from fleet logistics and central distribution to estates, stock management, sheet sales and a national network of depots. His quarter-century journey is a powerful testament to personal commitment and to a company culture that actively champions internal progression.
A Steep Learning Curve and a Culture of Opportunity
Danny’s entry into the trade came after meeting Jon Randles, who was serving as the Wirral depot manager at the time. "Back then, I didn’t know much about the industry at all, so it was a steep learning curve," Danny reflects. "GAP seemed like a great place to work and develop. I decided early on that with hard work and commitment, this could turn from just a job into a real career."
That early intuition proved spot-on. Over the next several years, Danny systematically worked his way through almost every operational function within the depot. From the warehouse floor, he stepped up to the trade counter, moved into stock control and the sales office, and advanced to assistant depot manager before taking the reins as depot manager.
From Three Depots to a National Network
Danny’s operational success at the depot level led to wider responsibilities across the group. Initially tasked with helping to mentor and develop a small cluster of three depots, his strategic remit expanded rapidly as the company grew, eventually encompassing 46 depots. His rise through the ranks culminated in his appointment to the Board of Directors. "Being promoted to the Board of Directors was a key personal moment for me," says Danny. "There are too many highlights to list, but beyond business milestones like successful acquisitions, playing a key part in developing and promoting other people will always be what I’m most proud of."
Growth Without Losing the Personal Touch
During Danny’s 25 years with the business, GAP has undergone a massive transformation. The company has scaled from a regional distributor into a national trade power, expanding its footprint across the country while building out dedicated manufacturing sites, including the state-of-the-art facilities behind Rockdoor composite doors.
Yet despite this growth, Danny emphasises that the core identity of the business remains intact: "We are a lot bigger as an organisation now, from depot numbers to manufacturing sites and all the aspects in between. But GAP has grown to become a professional business while still retaining that same friendly, hands-on feel that made it a great place to work in the first place."
The broader trade landscape has evolved alongside the business. While the fundamental purpose (supplying high-quality home improvement materials to trade professionals and homeowners) remains unchanged, the sophistication of the product range has elevated significantly. Modern uPVC building products, composite door systems and low-maintenance solutions now offer vastly superior aesthetics, energy efficiency and security performance compared to what was on offer two decades ago.
A Flat Structure That Empowers
When asked what single piece of advice he would give to a new warehouse operative starting out today, Danny points directly to curiosity and communication. "Never be afraid to ask questions to whoever you feel can give you the best answer," he advises. "GAP works with a flat structure, so never feel like you can’t call the owners or directors if you feel they can help. No question is too big or too silly, everyone is happy to support you."
As GAP continues its strategic expansion across the UK and prepares for future milestones, including Rockdoor’s 30th anniversary in 2027, Danny’s story stands as a clear signal to both staff and trade customers: GAP is a business built on deep-rooted experience, genuine relationships and leaders who know the trade from the ground up.
