Anthracite Grey may still dominate PVC-U installations, but its long-term position is under pressure as colour preferences shift, according to Deceuninck.
Darren Woodcock, General Manager at Deceuninck, said the company has seen significant changes in colour trends over the past decade, with growing evidence that demand is moving away from traditional grey tones and woodgrain finishes.
Figures from Renolit indicate that anthracite grey volumes fell by 31% in 2024, alongside declines in other grey finishes. Despite this, Woodcock noted that anthracite grey and similar tones still account for a substantial share of the market, meaning they remain commercially important in the short term.
At the same time, data suggests a broader move towards solid colour finishes. Renolit figures show solid colours increasing from 53% of the market in 2016 to 83% in 2025 across the UK and Ireland.
Deceuninck’s own data reflects a similar pattern, with solid colours accounting for 84% of its foiled product sales. Woodcock said consumer research commissioned by the company also indicates that younger homeowners are more likely to favour smooth, solid finishes over traditional woodgrain effects.
He added that this shift is influencing how installers and fabricators position their product offers, particularly when targeting homeowners in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
In terms of emerging trends, Renolit data highlights growth in darker tones such as Beck Brown and Black Brown, alongside increases in finishes including Agate Grey, Cement Grey and Pebble Grey.
Deceuninck said its own customer base is already reflecting a more diverse colour mix, with anthracite grey representing a smaller proportion of sales compared to the wider market.
Woodcock added that alongside colour trends, lead times are becoming an increasingly important factor, with installers prioritising availability and speed of supply when securing work.
