Fix Radio, the UK’s fastest-growing national radio station for tradespeople, is highlighting the potential impact of stalled housing developments on the businesses and workers needed to build them.
A new report from the Prosper UK Housing Commission, chaired by former housing minister Lord Gavin Barwell, cites estimates attributing £38,030 in additional costs per new home since 2020 to policy requirements and taxation, including regulation. It warns that rising costs and weak buyer demand are leaving developments financially unviable, even where planning permission is already in place.
The consequences can extend across the construction supply chain, with developments that fail to start meaning fewer contracts for builders and specialist subcontractors. Smaller firms may have to find replacement jobs or delay investment, while an uncertain workload can make taking on apprentices harder. Fix Radio is calling for tradespeople’s needs to remain central to the housebuilding debate, with clearer requirements and more predictable costs helping businesses turn housing ambitions into dependable work on site.
