The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) will hold its National Conference on 9–10 July at the Oxford Belfry Hotel & Spa, marking 85 years of the UK's largest construction trade body.
The two-day event, sponsored by People’s Pension will bring together FMB members, industry leaders and policymakers to explore the challenges and opportunities facing SME builders, from rising costs and skills shortages to planning reform and the Government’s housebuilding ambitions.
The conference will be chaired by science presenter and broadcaster Philippa Forrester and will conclude with a black-tie Gala Dinner at the historic Exeter College, Oxford, where journalist and former Fleet Street editor Eve Pollard will deliver an after-dinner speech.
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said:
“Eighty-five years on and the FMB remains the voice of the small builder – and events like this are a reminder of just how much strength there is in our membership. Builders are the backbone of the UK construction industry, delivering the homes, renovations and repairs that communities depend on. This conference is a chance to come together and celebrate 85 years of the FMB speaking up for small building companies.”
FMB National President Phillip Hall, who is hosting the event, said:
“This is a tough time to be running a small building firm. Costs are up, the pipeline is uncertain, and too many good builders are being undercut by cowboys who don’t play by the rules. But when FMB members come together, you feel the real strength of this industry – the skill, the graft, the pride in doing the job properly. Oxford is a chance to take a breath, swap notes with people who understand what you’re going through, and remind ourselves why it matters. Eighty-five years in, the FMB is still fighting for the builder who does it right. I can’t wait to welcome members to what promises to be a brilliant two days.”
Chris Carr, Immediate FMB Past President concluded:
“Having had the privilege of serving as National President, I’ve seen first-hand the resilience and professionalism of FMB members. Over the decades the FMB has remained a champion for quality builders. Reaching 85 years is a significant milestone and this conference is not only a celebration of that legacy, but a vital opportunity to keep pushing forward to raise standards, support the next generation and make sure trusted, skilled builders across the UK continue to be get their voices heard."
Across the two days, members will attend a Business Conference featuring expert speakers, an open FMB Board meeting for all members, and a Thursday evening networking BBQ. The Gala Dinner at Exeter College, University of Oxford will be followed by an afterparty.
The event has attracted support from a wide range of industry partners including CITB, Bibby Financial Services, Build Academy, MKM, VELUX, and The Lighthouse Club, the construction industry’s mental health charity, which will receive donations collected during the event.
