Installer Growth Strategies

Installer Growth Strategies

The UK's fenestration market has never been more competitive. Installers are operating in an environment of rising customer expectations, increasing product choice, tighter project schedules and ongoing economic uncertainty. Yet despite these challenges, some businesses continue to grow, win larger projects and expand their market share.

According to Astra Windows, the difference often comes down to strategy rather than circumstance. The Greater Manchester-based aluminium fabricator believes a growing divide is emerging between installers who are adapting to changing market demands and those who continue to rely on increasingly crowded, price-driven sectors.

David Jackson, Managing Director of Astra Windows, explains, "There are still opportunities in the market, but the installers making the most of them are approaching their businesses differently. They're broadening their offering, moving into new areas of work and looking beyond simply competing on price. They're finding ways to add value, increase margins and future-proof their businesses."

One of the most significant shifts Astra Windows has observed is the continued growth of aluminium across both residential and commercial projects. Once considered a premium niche product, aluminium is now becoming an increasingly common specification across a wide range of applications, from residential extensions and self-builds through to education, healthcare, retail and commercial developments.

Homeowners are increasingly drawn to aluminium's slim sightlines, contemporary aesthetics, durability and thermal performance, while commercial clients continue to favour its versatility and long-term performance. As a result, installers who can confidently offer aluminium solutions are finding themselves well positioned to capitalise on growing demand.

"Aluminium is no longer an optional extra for many installers," says David, "It's becoming an essential part of a modern product portfolio."

Astra Windows believes the most successful installers are also broadening the types of projects they undertake. Rather than focusing solely on traditional replacement window work, many are expanding into areas such as:

Premium residential projects

Self-build developments

Commercial glazing

Shopfront installations

Curtain walling applications

Internal aluminium screening systems

This diversification allows businesses to access new revenue streams while reducing reliance on any single market sector.

"The installers we see performing strongly are often those willing to embrace new opportunities," David continues, "They're not putting all their eggs in one basket. They're building a broader offering that allows them to respond to changing customer demand."

The company also notes that today's customers are increasingly informed. Whether residential homeowners, developers, architects or commercial specifiers, clients are asking more questions about thermal performance, sustainability, security, aesthetics and product longevity than ever before.

As a result, installers are increasingly expected to act as advisers rather than simply product suppliers. Those who can confidently discuss product performance, system options and design solutions are often finding themselves at a competitive advantage.

Established in 1989, Astra Windows has spent more than 37 years supporting trade installers across the UK. Working with leading aluminium system houses including ALUK, Aluna and Jack Aluminium, the company supplies a complete portfolio of aluminium solutions covering both residential and commercial applications.

Its range includes aluminium windows, sliding patio doors, bifolding doors, entrance doors, internal aluminium doors and screening systems, curtain walling, shopfronts, commercial entrance systems, rooflights and lanterns.

The company recently strengthened its credentials further through achieving ALUK Approved Fabricator status, recognising its long-standing expertise in aluminium fabrication and system knowledge spanning more than two decades.

While market conditions remain challenging, Astra Windows remains optimistic about the opportunities available to installers willing to evolve.

"The businesses that thrive over the next five to ten years will be the ones that continue to adapt," David concludes, "The market is changing, customer expectations are changing and product demand is changing. Installers who embrace those changes and continue to invest in their offering will be the ones best placed for long-term success."
